On the same course that will be used for October’s WEMBO World Solo 24 Hour MTB Championships (save for a new 6/10 mile single-rack still under construction) young local rider Steven Mills took the win in the pro ranks. Mills is no stranger to the trails of Weaverville, having won last October’s 27-mile LaGrange Fall Classic held on portions of this same course.

Mills was in fine form and had a confidence boost three weeks earlier when he bested a very strong field to take the pro win at the Shasta Lemurian Classic held just 40 miles up the road from Weaverville. Mills bided his time in the early laps of the 12 Hours of Weaverville, allowing Jason Perez (single-speed winner of October’s 8 Hours of Weaverville) to show the way around for awhile.

Mills got by Perez on the fifth lap and built a lead, eventually completing 11 laps to Perez’s 10 laps. Mills’ win is all the more impressive considering that while he raced in the pro category he was actually aboard a single-speed, having decided only on race morning to change his entry to test himself in the pros.

Prior to this race Mills hadn’t given much thought to racing the Worlds, but he is definitely considering it now.
